Average vs weighted marketing rates: avoid a common reporting error

Calculate aggregate CTR and other compatible rates from their underlying counts rather than averaging percentages.

THE SHORT ANSWER

An ordinary average gives every row equal weight. An aggregate rate gives each underlying observation the weight implied by its denominator. When campaigns or pages have different volumes, averaging their percentages can produce a result that does not describe the combined activity.

Work through it, step by step.

  1. Identify the numerator and denominator of the rate. Confirm that the rows represent compatible, non-overlapping activity.

  2. Sum the compatible numerators and denominators, then divide. Keep unique-user measures and overlapping audiences out of this simple addition.

  3. Show the aggregate alongside segment results when the variation matters. A blended rate can still hide an important difference between audiences.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE · NOT CUSTOMER DATA

Make it concrete.

One page has 1 click from 10 impressions and another has 10 from 1,000. Their simple average CTR is 5.5%, but combined CTR is 11 divided by 1,010, about 1.09%.

What to keep in mind.

Not every average can be reconstructed from the fields you have. Without the correct weights or compatible scopes, report the limitation instead of inventing a combined figure.

Your next useful step.

Use visible counts in recurring reports and review aggregation whenever a new breakdown is added. Keep both the total and the segment explanation when making decisions.

A useful comparison starts with the question you need to answer. Preserve the source and calculation of each number instead of forcing different reports into one total. These are methodological comparisons, not claims that one provider is universally better.
