What does average position mean in Search Console?
Use reported search position as contextual evidence instead of a fixed universal rank.
Average position summarises observed search-result positions according to Search Console’s rules. It combines different searches and contexts. A reported value is therefore not a promise that every person sees your page in one specific slot.
How to read this metric
Keep the query, page, country, device and period associated with the measure. Broad aggregation can hide useful variation.
Read position alongside impressions and clicks. A changing query mix can move the average without a uniform ranking change.
Inspect important query-page pairs rather than making a sitewide judgement from the headline average.
Make it concrete.
A page begins appearing for many new broad queries at weaker positions while retaining its core-query visibility. Its overall average may worsen even as its useful exposure expands.
What to keep in mind.
Do not reconstruct an aggregate by averaging displayed row positions without the appropriate compatible weights. Manual search checks are also only snapshots.
