What is GA4 bounce rate?
Understand the complement of engagement rate and avoid confusing it with older analytics definitions.
GA4 bounce rate is the percentage of sessions that were not classified as engaged. It complements engagement rate rather than providing a wholly separate behaviour score. Use it with the same care about page purpose, sample size and measurement configuration.
How to read this metric
Confirm that the source is GA4 and that the comparison uses its definitions. Keep the reporting period and relevant audience consistent.
Subtract engagement rate from 100% when using the same report scope. Do not mix a rate from one segment with another segment’s total.
Review the page’s intended task before judging its level. Quick successful visits and failed visits can both require additional evidence to interpret.
Make it concrete.
An engagement rate of 72% corresponds to a bounce rate of 28% for the same scope. Averaging the two would discard their meaning.
What to keep in mind.
A historical report using a different analytics definition may not be comparable. Relabelling the column does not repair the difference.
Your next useful step.
Use unexpected changes to choose a focused measurement or page-experience check, and preserve the definition in recurring reports.
Working with this in Liftaven
A metric needs a numerator, denominator, reporting period and source. Record those alongside the result. The examples in these notes are invented to explain the calculation; they are not industry benchmarks or Liftaven customer results.
