Metric notes / Metric note

What is a marketing impression?

Keep search and advertising impression definitions separate when reading visibility reports.

THE SHORT ANSWER

An impression is a recorded exposure under a source’s counting rules. Search and advertising systems can apply different conditions. The number is useful only when the source and scope are named; it is not automatically a count of distinct people who noticed the message.

How to read this metric

  1. Identify the provider and report type. Keep search impressions separate from advertising delivery impressions.

  2. Read impressions with response and relevant audience context. More exposure can come from broader or less useful queries and placements.

  3. Check whether a change in reporting scope or delivery mix explains the movement before treating it as audience growth.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE · NOT CUSTOMER DATA

Make it concrete.

A campaign produces 50,000 impressions but reaches fewer distinct people because some are exposed repeatedly. A search impression total describes a different system and should not be added as equivalent reach.

What to keep in mind.

Exposure is not attention, a visit or a sale. An aggregate impression count cannot establish the quality of the audience.

Your next useful step.

Use impressions to investigate visibility within one source. Pair them with the appropriate click or outcome measure and retain the definition.

Working with this in Liftaven

A metric needs a numerator, denominator, reporting period and source. Record those alongside the result. The examples in these notes are invented to explain the calculation; they are not industry benchmarks or Liftaven customer results.
