Investigate a spike in GA4 direct traffic

Check campaign tagging, redirects and referral context when direct traffic changes unexpectedly.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Direct traffic is not a clean count of people typing your address. A sudden increase can reflect missing acquisition context as well as genuine navigation. Start by finding the pages and release dates involved, then check the routes people used to reach them.

Work through it, step by step.

  1. Identify the day the change started and the landing pages responsible. Compare total sessions so a reclassification is not mistaken for wholly new demand.

  2. Review recent email, messaging, offline and partner campaigns. Inspect the actual published links and any redirects that could alter their campaign parameters.

  3. Check related referral and paid-source trends. A decline in one source alongside a matching direct increase can point towards a tagging problem worth reproducing.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE · NOT CUSTOMER DATA

Make it concrete.

An email campaign links through a redirect that drops its campaign parameters. Visits may lose the intended campaign context, so a direct spike should trigger link testing before a brand-awareness celebration.

What to keep in mind.

You cannot recover a visitor’s true source from a label alone. Avoid distributing direct traffic proportionally across channels and presenting the result as observed attribution.

Your next useful step.

Fix link generation and redirect behaviour where the evidence supports it. Annotate the affected period, and distinguish confirmed campaign traffic from traffic whose source remains unknown.
