Compare mobile and desktop search performance

Find device-specific search opportunities while accounting for query mix, result layouts and landing-page experience.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A mobile CTR or position difference can come from the searches people make as well as the site they visit. Compare devices within important pages and query groups. Then inspect the actual mobile experience instead of treating a device average as a diagnosis.

Work through it, step by step.

  1. Start with a high-value page and compare device segments over the same complete period. Record counts alongside rates so a small desktop sample does not dominate the discussion.

  2. Look for different query intent between devices. Local, urgent or short searches may behave differently from longer research-oriented searches.

  3. Open the landing page on a small screen. Check whether the answer, main action and essential information are accessible without a broken layout or obstructive overlay.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE · NOT CUSTOMER DATA

Make it concrete.

A service page has weaker mobile CTR but receives many broad informational queries on mobile. Comparing that audience with desktop branded searches would unfairly blame the mobile title or layout.

What to keep in mind.

Search visibility and on-site engagement describe different stages. A mobile layout issue is a plausible follow-up, not something that Search Console clicks alone prove.

Your next useful step.

Create a specific device hypothesis, such as an unclear local-service promise, and compare matched segments after the change. Use Analytics separately to inspect what mobile visitors do after arrival.
