Audit a sitemap before submitting it
Check sitemap URLs, public access and canonical consistency before requesting a search engine fetch.
A sitemap is a list of URLs you want a search engine to discover. Its usefulness depends on the quality of that list. Submitting a file full of redirects, excluded pages or stale URLs creates more investigation work without ensuring the intended pages appear in search.
Work through it, step by step.
Open the sitemap and check that it is publicly reachable in the expected format. If it is a sitemap index, inspect representative child files as well.
Sample URLs from different sections. Confirm that they lead directly to useful public pages and agree with the canonical and indexing policy for those pages.
Compare the sitemap with important pages linked from your navigation and topic hubs. Investigate missing high-value sections and unnecessary utility or filtered URLs.
Make it concrete.
A sitemap still lists the old version of every guide after a URL restructure. Updating the source that generates the file is more durable than manually patching the deployed XML.
What to keep in mind.
A submitted URL count describes the file, not the number of indexed pages. Search engines decide what to fetch and index independently.
