Search Console / Practical guide

Build a useful weekly Search Console report

Create a compact weekly search report that explains meaningful changes and assigns the next investigation.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A weekly report should reduce uncertainty about the next action. Lead with the pages and query groups that explain meaningful change, not a dashboard of every available number. Stable reporting choices make the report useful even in weeks when nothing dramatic happens.

Work through it, step by step.

  1. Fix the property, search type and complete reporting window. Use comparable weekdays and state the comparison period in the report title or opening note.

  2. Summarise clicks and impressions, then identify the pages with the largest absolute gains and losses. Add CTR and position only where they help explain a specific pattern.

  3. Choose a small number of investigations with owners and evidence to collect. Carry forward unresolved questions rather than replacing them with a fresh list each week.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE · NOT CUSTOMER DATA

Make it concrete.

A report says clicks fell 8%, with most of the loss on two retired event pages. That is more actionable than calling for a sitewide content refresh based on the headline percentage alone.

What to keep in mind.

A weekly cadence does not make every week statistically informative. Low-volume sites may need longer windows before a rate change deserves an operational response.

Your next useful step.

End with one decision, one open question and the next review date. Link the underlying report and preserve filters so a colleague can reproduce the finding.

Working with this in Liftaven

Start with a verified property and a complete reporting period. Keep the search type, country and device consistent when comparing results. Liftaven provides search reports and an MCP route; use the native Search Console interface for checks that are not exposed in a particular report.
