Explain a GA4 channel-mix change

Distinguish a channel losing share from losing traffic, and connect acquisition shifts to page purpose.

THE SHORT ANSWER

A channel’s share can fall while its absolute traffic grows. Channel mix describes the composition of visits, so it should be read alongside counts and outcomes. The useful question is what changed in the audience and whether that change serves the business.

Work through it, step by step.

  1. Calculate each channel’s sessions and share within the same total. Keep the total visible so a changing denominator cannot hide the direction of the channel itself.

  2. Identify campaigns or page launches that explain large movements. Check tagging consistency before treating a new category as a new source of demand.

  3. Compare relevant engagement and outcome measures within the major channels. Do not assume the largest channel is the most useful one.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE · NOT CUSTOMER DATA

Make it concrete.

Organic sessions rise from 4,000 to 5,000 while a paid launch grows total sessions from 8,000 to 15,000. Organic share falls, but organic volume has improved.

What to keep in mind.

Channels can have different roles in the buying journey. Their reported rates do not automatically measure incremental value or justify moving budget between them.

Your next useful step.

Explain the composition change in plain language and choose a follow-up on audience quality, campaign measurement or landing-page fit. Preserve both shares and absolute numbers in the report.
