How to prioritise striking-distance keywords
Use near-page-one query opportunities without treating average position as a guaranteed ranking.
Striking-distance analysis looks for relevant queries whose reported positions suggest that a modest improvement might make them more visible. The useful output is a prioritised research list. It is not a prediction that every query in a position band will produce traffic.
Work through it, step by step.
Select a window long enough to avoid reacting to one unusual day. Use Liftaven’s striking-distance report or a query export to find an initial position band worth reviewing.
Check that each query has meaningful impressions and a page that genuinely answers it. Remove navigational mismatches and terms that belong to a different product or market.
Review the page, internal links and competing result formats. Prioritise changes you can explain, such as a missing comparison or unclear answer, over simply inserting the query more often.
Make it concrete.
Two terms average position 12. One describes your core service and has a useful landing page; the other refers to an unrelated product. Their positions are similar, but only the first belongs in your improvement queue.

Average position combines observations across searches. A value near a familiar page boundary does not mean everyone saw the same fixed result position.

Rank opportunities by relevance, evidence, potential usefulness and implementation effort. Record the original query-page pair and revisit that same pair when evaluating the change.
