Metric notes / Metric note

What is conversion rate?

Choose the outcome and denominator that make a conversion-rate calculation meaningful.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Conversion rate describes how frequently a defined outcome occurs relative to a defined base. That base might be sessions, users or advertising interactions. The phrase alone is incomplete: the exact event, denominator and counting rules belong beside the percentage.

How to read this metric

  1. Choose the outcome and the population the question concerns. Avoid switching between sessions and clicks within a comparison.

  2. Divide the compatible outcome count by the chosen denominator and multiply by 100. Preserve the raw counts.

  3. Check whether multiple outcomes per visit are possible. An event-count ratio is not the same as the share of visits with at least one outcome.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE · NOT CUSTOMER DATA

Make it concrete.

A site records 40 completed enquiries across 2,000 sessions. The event-count ratio is 2%; a session conversion measure would need the number of sessions containing the outcome.

What to keep in mind.

Ratios from different counting rules are not interchangeable. A rate increase can also result from a changing traffic mix rather than an improved experience.

Your next useful step.

Name the numerator and denominator explicitly. Use the rate with outcome volume and a direct review of the relevant user task.

Working with this in Liftaven

A metric needs a numerator, denominator, reporting period and source. Record those alongside the result. The examples in these notes are invented to explain the calculation; they are not industry benchmarks or Liftaven customer results.
