Cost per defined action

Enter your values, then calculate.

CPA = spend ÷ completed actions

The average spend per action you counted. Name that action before comparing campaigns.

THE SHORT ANSWER

Use this calculator for a clearly named action such as a completed enquiry or purchase. Enter the spend and count from a compatible report. Calling the result customer acquisition cost requires a customer denominator, not just any event labelled as a conversion.

Work through it, step by step.

  1. Define the action in plain language before entering a number. Check whether the measurement counts a completed outcome or an earlier interaction.

  2. Enter spend and actions from the same period and scope. Allow for delayed outcomes when choosing the window.

  3. Interpret the result alongside action volume and quality. Keep different action types in separate comparisons.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLE · NOT CUSTOMER DATA

Make it concrete.

If 900 in spend produces 30 completed enquiries, the result is 30 per enquiry. It says nothing by itself about how many enquiries became qualified customers.

What to keep in mind.

With zero actions, cost per action is undefined. Reporting zero would misleadingly imply that outcomes were acquired at no cost.

Your next useful step.

Use the conversion-actions guide to verify the denominator. Investigate a meaningful cost increase through measurement, traffic intent and the destination experience.
